Well that was quick. Responding to a Getty Images complaint filed last Thursday, Microsoft has removed its Bing Image Widget. Getty had complained that the widget displayed copyrighted images without acquiring the rights to do so.

Friday the U.S. District Court had ordered Microsoft to show why it should not be prohibited from employing its Image Widget to display images without a license for such use by the copyright owners. And today Microsoft took the thing down, noting, "We have temporarily removed the beta."

The Bing Image Widget let Web site operators display a slide show based on a Bing Image Search. As Getty noted, however, the widget made no attempt to filter out copyrighted images, some of which were Getty's.
