In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention (with more than 140 characters). This time we look at Nikon's 2014 Small World competition winners, Peter Turnley taking the train, the Chronicle's Scott Strazzante recounts his World Series moment and HDR Express 3.

  • Nikon announced the winners of its 2014 Small World Competition. First prize went to Rogelio Moreno of Panama "for capturing a rarely seen image of a rotifer’s open mouth interior and heart-shaped corona." You can see all the winners on the 2014 Photomicrography Competition page.
  • In A Halloween on the Trains of New York City, Peter Turnley asked, "Excuse me, I'm a photographer, and I'm riding the train photographing people tonight, and you both are so beautiful, could I please make a photograph of you?"
  • Scott Strazzante details how he got his Posey-Bumgarner shot as the Giants won the World Series. A nice album accompanies the piece, too.
  • Unified Color has released its $79 HDR Express 3 adding Merge, Alignment & Deghosting while improving Adaptive Tone Mapping and adding a new Gamma slider and Visual Browser.

More to come...
