In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention (with more than 140 characters). This time we look at how to win a grant, two Instagram collections, a Nikon D3100 bargain and a SilverFast and IT8 target discount.

  • Alain Briot discusses The Granting Process of Michael Reichmann's Luminous Endowment. As one of the judges, he discusses the applications ("the problem which affected the majority of applicants was not following the grant applications rules") and provides some examples of good applications.
  • Hmmm, trending. Derrick Story, "feeling more at home in this square wonderland," has posted My Top 7 Instagram Photos of 2014 and Julieanne Kost has posted Visual Memories -- The Year in Review, her favorite Instagram photos. "I would strongly encourage you to create a collection of your own images for the year," she writes. "I have found both the process and the results to be very insightful."
  • We had some fun figuring out the Nikon D3100 earlier this year. Adorama has a refurbished D3100 with two lenses, the 18-55mm kit we used and the 55-2200mm zoom, for $339 (down from $499.95) with free shipping.
  • LaserSoft Imaging is offering a 25 percent discount on SilverFast software and IT8 targets when you use the code happy2014 at its online store.

More to come...
