The National Press Photographers Association reports that Sports Illustrated has fired its remaining six staff photographers. Robert Beck, Simon Bruty, Bill Frakes, David E. Klutho, John W. McDonough and Al Tielemans were terminated yesterday, according to the report.

SI Director of Photography Brad Smith attributed the decision to the need to "restructure various departments" in light of "economic circumstances."

He added, "Our commitment to photography is as strong as ever, and we will continue to create the best original content possible."

Poynter reports that SI expects to "rely increasingly on submissions from contributing photographers." Smith said he hopes the laid off photographers will be among them and "continue to contribute to the magazine" under a different structure."

He added, "I can't imagine a world where they don't."
