Matinee: 'Easter Parade' Share This on LinkedIn   Share This on Google   Tweet This   Forward This

4 April 2015

Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the seventy-ninth in our series of Saturday matinees today: Easter Parade by J-F Vergel.

This video is a compilation of stills shot at last year's Easter Parade on New York's Fifth Ave. J-F Vergel did the photography and the video was edited by Vergel and Susan Wamsley with music by Dexter Britain.

Paris-born J-F Vergel is a self-taught New York City-based photographer who has been a guitarist and composer since the mid-1970s, when he played and performed in punk and rock-n-roll bands. Since 2007, he has focused on a full time career in photography, relying on freelance work to support his interest in the art.

In this nearly four-minute slide show of black and white images Vergel shows us a lot of characters -- and even more hats. Or should we say Easter bonnets. They are nearly all outrageous.

And that strikes us, somehow, as redemptive.
