In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention (with more than 140 characters). This time we look at upgrading a Drobo 5D, using a basic lighting kit, Lincoln portraits and baseball in San Francisco.

  • Derrick Story adds 6-TB of storage to his Drobo 5D by swapping out a couple of drives, one at a time. "Seven hours later, all the lights were green, and I was ready to go," he writes. Go on, that is, to the second 3-TB drive.
  • In Your Basic Lighting Kit: A Spin Around the Block, Strobist David Hobby explains how to use your first off-camera lighting gear.
  • In All in the Family With Lincoln, David Gonzalez tells the story of the Kunhardt family's "large, unrivaled collection of images of Lincoln," which is the subject of tonight's HBO documentary Living With Lincoln and a photo book published by Steidl and the Meserve-Kunhardt Foundation.
  • It's Opening Day in San Francisco for the World Champion Giants and the local paper has a 43-image slide show with photos of the Pacific Coast League at Seals Stadium to the World Series Parade last October. Some classic shots in there (like Sadie Case offering her glasses to the umpire at home plate during a Mother's Day game), not to be missed by any fan.

More to come...
