Seattle photographer Bryan Peterson has revised his Learning to See Creatively: Design, Color and Composition in Photography with all new images, tips and assignments drawn from his workshops at the Bryan Peterson School of Photography.

Creativity is not something you're born with, according to Peterson. It's something you can learn. The book describes basic techniques that cover capturing an image and improving on it.

Key topics include the elements of design, composition, lens choice, lighting and post processing tips.

Peterson is also the author of Understanding Exposure, Understanding Shutter Speed, Understanding Close-Up Photography, Understanding Digital Photography, Beyond Portraiture and, most recently, Bryan Peterson's Understanding Photography Field Guide.

Among his many photographic awards are the Art Director Club's Gold Award and honors from Communication Arts and Print magazines.

Learning to See Creatively: Design, Color and Composition in Photography will be available on Aug. 4 for $25.99 or $19.34 from amazon.com.

Learning to See Creatively, Third Edition: Design, Color and Composition in Photography By Bryan Peterson Coming August 4th

"Some might think that creativity is in short supply, but in fact most shooters suffer from an oversupply of complacency. Demand more of yourself!" -- Bryan Peterson

In this new edition of his classic guide, bestselling author Bryan Peterson teaches photographers of all levels to visualize their work, and the world, in a whole new light by developing their photographic vision. Fully revised with all new tips, photos and exercises drawn from his international workshops at the Bryan Peterson School of Photography, veteran instructor Peterson takes a radical approach to creativity by explaining how it is not just an inherent ability but a skill that can be learned and applied.

Using inventive images from his own stunning portfolio, he details the basic techniques that go into not only taking a particular photo, but also provides insights on how to improve upon it -- helping readers avoid the visual pitfalls and technical dead ends that can lead to dull, uninventive photographs.

Learning to See Creatively is the definitive reference for any photographer looking for a fresh perspective on their work.

Accompanying the gorgeous and surprising images are examples, exercises and instruction on key topics:

  • Elements of design -- focus on shape, texture, pattern, color to create your best photo
  • Composition -- horizontal vs. vertical orientation, framing and using and breaking the rule of thirds
  • Lens choice -- how using a wide-angle, fish-eye, macro, telephoto or zoom decides what viewers see
  • Light it up -- using light's brightness, color and direction to affect the mood and tone
  • Photoshop tips -- combining, layering, cloning and reflecting for surprising results

Bryan Peterson is a professional photographer, internationally known instructor and founder of The Bryan Peterson School of Photography. He is also the best-selling author of Understanding Exposure, Understanding Shutter Speed, Understanding Close-Up Photography, Understanding Digital Photography, Beyond Portraiture and, most recently, Bryan Peterson's Understanding Photography Field Guide. His trademark use of color and strong, graphic composition have garnered him many photographic awards, including the Art Director Club's Gold Award and honors from Communication Arts and Print magazines. When not teaching workshops around the world, Bryan makes his home in Seattle.
