Maryland's Department of Natural Resources has opened its 12th annual photo contest with prizes that include win cash, State Parks Passports and other awards. In addition, winners will be featured in the 2016 Maryland Natural Resource Calendar and published in the Winter 2016 edition of the magazine.

Nearly 150 photographers entered about 800 photographs last year. Laurie Brice of Annapolis earned the Grand Prize for her up-close Red-footed Cannibalfly taken at the Glendenning Butterfly Garden within the Jug Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

Entries for this year's contest may be made online or by mail through Aug. 31. Categories include Birds, Insects, Flora, the Great Outdoors, Nature in Action, Scnery and Wildlife.

Entries fees vary depending on how many photos you submit. The minimum $10 fee includes three photos and up to 20 can be entered for $61.

Enter the Maryland Natural Resources Photo Contest

The Department of Natural Resource's 12th annual photo contest runs now through Aug. 31. Winners will be featured in the 2016 Maryland Natural Resource Calendar and published in the Winter 2016 edition of the magazine. Enter now -- online or by mail -- for your chance to win cash, State Parks Passports and other terrific prizes!

Winners will be announced in September on dnr.maryland.gov, news.maryland.gov/dnr and our social media outlets @AccessDNR.

Categories

  • Birds: Choose from more than 423 State species
  • Insects: Bugs, bugs and more bugs
  • Flora: Wild-growing plants, including flowers, leaves and fruits
  • Great Outdoors: People enjoying outdoor recreation in State Parks, forests, natural areas, etc.
  • Nature in Action: Rising tides, lightning and other storm events
  • Scenery: Spectacular landscapes from the mountains to the Bay and everything in between
  • Wildlife: Any creatures not covered in the Birds and Insects categories

We remind all participants to be careful of their surroundings and always put safety first in hazardous situations.

Entry Rules

All photos must be described on the contest entry form, which must be included with your photos.

An entry fee of $10 for up to three photos and $3 for each additional entry must be paid with your submissions. The number of photos that may be submitted by any photographer is unlimited.

Previously published photos or parts thereof are not eligible.

All photos must be original and must have been taken within the past two years.

Light edits/enhancements only -- heavy effects or manipulations will not be considered.

Photographers from any state may participate, but all photos must have been taken in Maryland.

Judges will make selections based on the quality, composition, content originality, creativity and mass appeal. Decisions are final and in the judges' sole and absolute discretion.

This offer is void where prohibited by law.

DNR is not responsible for lost or misdirected entries.

Photographers authorize DNR to distribute their image(s) for non-commercial purposes with photo credits -- including but not limited to education and news purposes -- to the State of Maryland, media, print, digital, online services and television for their use; and retain copyright to these photos, the above agreed to permissions not withstanding.*

The contest is open to all photographers, except for employees of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Public Television and their immediate families.

Please be mindful that the winning photos will appear in a standard size wall calendar and may need to be scaled to fit an 11x8.5-inch page.

How To Enter

To enter by mail:

  • Entries must be postmarked by Saturday, Aug. 31 to be considered.
  • Eligible formats include 5"x7" or 8"x10" prints. No slides or transparencies.
  • Photos are not to be matted, mounted or framed.
  • Each photo must be labeled on the reverse side with the name and address of the photographer, category and photo number corresponding to the entry form.

To enter online:

  • Entries must be sent by 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 31.
  • Photos must be the highest resolution possible -- a minimum of 1600px x 2000px at 300 dpi.
  • Go to http://shopdnr.com to pay the entry fee. Photos will not be considered entered until payment has been confirmed.
  • Email photos to photocontest.dnr@maryland.gov with the following information for each photo: title, location, date taken, type of camera, category.

Per our terms, DNR may post photos online -- including the DNR Web site and social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and Pinterest -- after the contest. If you enter online, please do not embed any nonessential personal data into your files.
