Sony announced it will include "user selectable Compressed and Uncompressed 14-Bit Raw image capture" starting with the A7R II, which will ship in October. The uncompressed Raw option will also be included in a firmware update for other Alpha cameras "beginning with the recently-introduced A7R II full-frame mirrorless model," the company said.
"The voice of our Alpha community remains the most important guiding force of our product development plans," said Neal Manowitz, Sony deputy vice president for digital imaging. "The addition of Uncompressed 14-Bit Raw processing is a direct result of customer feedback. Widely requested by photo and video enthusiasts, we believe the choice of Raw processing types will further elevate the performance of these extraordinary cameras."
RawDigger recently published Detecting Posterization in SONY cRAW/ARW2 Files to show how to detect artifacts caused by Sony's Raw compression, which has been the only Raw format available in recent Sony cameras.
