In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention (with more than 140 characters). This time we look at the new American West, Michael Tapes with a Sony A7R II, a more powerful Healing Brush in Snapseed and an auction of famous photos.

  • In The Changing Landscape of the American West, Rene Silverman describes Lucas Foglia's four-year project photographing a big and harsh landscape dotted with tight-knit communities whose lives were in transition. With 23 photos revealing the life in the wild countryside and work in the mining and energy development industries.
  • The meticulous Michael Tapes begins his Sony A7R II Review with a 20-minute comparison of dynamic range with the Canon 5DS R, Canon 1D X and Nikon D810. You can download the comparison photos, too.
  • John Nack reports the latest Snapseed update features more powerful Healing Brush with a "new ability to heal arbitrary-shaped regions. Just tap the filter selector, tap Healing, and then paint away the bits you’d like to omit." And it's non-destructive.
  • Artnet Auctions' Top Pics offers classic and contemporary photographs for live bidding through Sept. 30. This auction includes well-known works by Ansel Adams, Cindy Sherman, Vik Muniz, Alex Prager, Massimo Vitali , Helmut Newton, among others. And it's fun to look through the online gallery.

More to come...
