LucidCam Announces Stereo 3D 180° VR Camera Share This on LinkedIn   Share This on Google   Tweet This   Forward This

With the NY Times distributing over a million Google Cardboard VR devices, you might be wondering how one might capture VR. The LucidCam Indiegogo project provides an answer to that question with what it calls the "world's first consumer 3D VR camera." The $299 point-and-shoot VR camera has two 180-degree lenses and two microphones to instantly capture fully immersive photos and videos.

Files sizes range from 25- to 80-MB per minute, as compared to the 3-GB for a 10-minute video created by traditional VR technology. You then view the 3D content through a virtual reality headset, like the Oculus Rift or a mobile phone with a Google Cardboard.

"There are infinite applications for Virtual Reality, but the potential for truly creative content is wasted if only a limited number of people have access to the tools for capturing VR footage," Lucidcam CEO Han Jin said. "Our team worked tirelessly for the last two years to rethink the current video market and break down multiple camera module solutions into a 2-lens compact system."

LucidCam VR Launches World's First Stereoscopic 3D 180-Degree Virtual Reality Camera

Handheld, low cost camera captures VR for easy sharing with friends and family

SAN FRANCISCO -- A new era in virtual reality photography is starting today. With the launch of the world's first stereoscopic, 3D 180- degree virtual reality camera from Lucid VR, anyone who wants to capture fully immersive photos and videos can instantly do so with an easy and very low cost handheld camera. For the first time, pros and semi-pros as well as photo hobbyists, game developers and anyone else who loves content creation, can create amazing 3D, wide-angle images with the touch of a button. Coming from a team of Berkeley and Stanford graduates, the new LucidCam eliminates what has taken until now hours of time and thousands of dollars in equipment and software to do.

Under development for two years, LucidCam is available now through an IndieGoGo campaign.

The sleek camera has two lenses and two microphones to capture both stereoscopic images and sound. LucidCam leverages stereoscopy (3D imaging), a technique for enhancing the illusion of depth through binocular vision, to capture immersive images and videos. To take a shot, a user simply holds the camera and presses either record or shutter button. With its 180-degree field of view, users just hold the camera steady, no panoramic sweeps required.

Files sizes for the images and videos created with LucidCam are small and easy to share, only 25-80-MB per minute, as compared to the 3-GB for a 10-minute video that is created by traditional VR technology. Viewing this content through a virtual reality headset, like the Oculus Rift or your mobile phone with a Google Cardboard, completes the immersive experience.

"There are infinite applications for Virtual Reality, but the potential for truly creative content is wasted if only a limited number of people have access to the tools for capturing VR footage," Jin said. "Our team worked tirelessly for the last two years to rethink the current video market and break down multiple camera module solutions into a 2-lens compact system."

"In other words, a Grandson on the West Coast of the United States can create vivid videos for his Grandmother in China to show her exactly what his world is like," Jin said. "And the Grandmother can use something as simple as a cell phone paired with our various cardboards and viewing devices to look at the 3D 180-Degree video. I know, because I'm that Grandson."

"Go skydiving with friends from your living room or experience underground ruins with family across the globe," Jin said. "We can now truly let everyone see what we're doing on any adventure."
