In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention (with more than 140 characters). This time we look at Adorama's unusual gift guides, a Toshiba repair horror story, PowerPhotos and GIMP turns 20.

  • Adorama has published its Gift Guides, among which are ones for the Photographer and the Memory Keeper, both of which appear to be blogs of their own, a slightly different approach from the usual listings.
  • In Breaking a Toshiba Laptop Owner's Cycle of Repair, the Haggler David Segal tells the story of extracting a full refund for a laptop whose trackpad never functioned. Even after three on-site repairs and a complete replacement failed to resolve the issue. Why is customer service so hard for so many companies?
  • Glenn Fleishman reviews PowerPhotos, which "takes some of the shock out of Photos for OS X by helping bridge the gap between old and new." It helps you manage libraries (and even find duplicate images).
  • GIMP (the General Image Manipulation Program) was released 20 years ago Nov. 21. In 20 Years of GIMP, Slashdot collects quite a lot of commentary on the software.

We've also updated our Calendar today and there's always more to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
