In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention (with more than 140 characters). This time we look at how to compile a year in pictures, Affinity freebies, Corey Woodruff and a BorrowLenses discount.

  • In The Year in Pictures: How We Made the Cut, James Estrin takes you backstage to see how New York Times Year in Pictures 2015 was compiled from 150,000 images no less. That's 75,000 per eye in search of "a masterfully crafted photograph."
  • Affinity has awarded the iPad Pro and Pencil to Katie Porter but so you don't feel entirely left out, the company is giving away a few freebies. The list includes the Daub vector brushes for Affinity Designer, Daub blender brushes for Affinity Photo, keyboard cheat sheets (it's not really cheating to be reminded, you know), Panorama source files to try out the pano feature in Affinity Photo and tutorials on the new Apple TV. Both Designer and Photo are available for 20 percent off until Dec. 24, too.
  • Erin Williams talks to Corey Woodruff about his All of the Faces project, in which he spent the year taking pictures of all of his Facebook friends. The project, Woodruff said, "has taught him well about the benefits of forging relationships beyond the keyboard." And he's not done yet.
  • BorrowLenses will give you a 15 percent discount on rentals placed by Dec. 28 that start by Jan. 4, 2016 when you use the code NEWARRIVAL15.

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
