Four months late, the crab boats left the dock to begin the commercial Dungeness fishing season. As we sat down to dinner at sunset we saw the lights from their boats on the ocean.
They'll get $2.80 a pound for unusually big, meaty crabs, which tend to be about two pounds each. At the market, they tend to go for around $9 a pound at the beginning of the season and inch up as the catch decreases.
It may be a short season with the gray whale migration starting and salmon season opening May 1.
But it was sure nice to see those lights strung out across the ocean this evening. Star of the Sea, light their way!
