The Google Cultural Institute has launched its Arts & Culture Web site plus a companion Android and iOS app to help learn about artworks in the wild (museums, that is). In The new Google Arts & Culture, on exhibit now, the company introduced the new initiative.

The beta Web site allows you "to immerse yourself in cultural experiences across art, history and wonders of the world—from more than a thousand museums across 70 countries." You can search for subjects, scroll through art by time and read a new post every day.

There are over 9,000 photographs in the collection at the moment. We searched for Yosemite photographs and got six exhibits, 450 images, some related artists (like Eadweard Muybridge) and 44 user galleries.

The free 45-MB app makes a nice personal docent when you actually find yourself in a museum:

Just pull up the app, point your phone's camera to a painting on display and find all the information you want to know about the artwork. We're planning to roll this out to museums around the world -- so stay tuned.

Partner museums include the Harvard Art Museums, the National Museums of World Culture, Sanskriti Museums in New Delhi, Altes Museum in Berlin, Pergamonmuseum also in Berlin and the Old Masters Picture Gallery of the Dresden State Art Museum.
