Olympus Introduces Pen E-PL8, Three Lenses, Pro Flash

At Photokina today Olympus announced its entry-level Pen E-PL8 mirrorless camera along with three lenses and a pro-level flash.

Key features of the Pen E-PL8 include:

  • A 16-Mp Four Thirds Sensor
  • ISO range from 100 to 25,600
  • 8.5 fps burst rate
  • 3.0-inch, 1,040k dot flip-down touch-panel LCD monitor
  • Self-portrait mode and features
  • Art Filter with Live View
  • Movie Icon and Clips recording
  • Photo Story
  • Old Film Effect
  • Built-In WiFi

The 14 art filters include Pop Art, Soft Focus, Pale and Light Color, Light Tone, Grainy Film, Pin Hole, Diorama, Cross Process, Gentle Sepia, Dramatic Tone, Key Line, Watercolor, Vintage, and Partial Color. And they are active in Live View so you can preview the effect in real time.

Photo Story composites multiple images into a photo album-like layout ready to print.

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 25mm f1.2 PRO Lens

The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 25mm f1.2 PRO lens (50mm 35mm equivalent) includes 19 elements in 14 groups, the lens is complex but promises high rewards in the form of clear and sharp images. The lens includes Z Coating Nano to reduce ghosts and flaring.

An inner focusing system is light, fast and accurate. It's also silent, so the lens can be used when shooting video.

The waterproof lens sports a traditional depth-of-field scale and a manual focus switch. It can focus as close as 30cm with 0.11x magnification.

The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 25mm f1.2 PRO lens will ship in early October for $1,199.

Olympus M.Zuiko ED 12-100mm f4 IS PRO Zoom Lens

The 12-100mm f4 IS PRO zoom lens (a 24-200mm 35mm equivalent) features a consistent f4 maximum aperture throughout the zoom range with one DSA lens for zoom-related aberrations, five ED lenses to supress color bleeding and chromatic aberation, plus three aspherical, two Super HR and one HR lens element for a total of 17 elements in 11 groups.

Olympus said the 5-axis sync Image Stabilization can achieve six stops of stabilization. Focus ranges as close as 15cm in wide angle mode, with 0.30x magnification. A seven-blade circular aperture diaphragm. The lens is hermetically sealed against water and dust and accepts 72mm filters.

The 12-100mm lens will be available in November for $1,299.

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 30mm f3.5 Macro Lens

The 30mm f3.5 Macro lens focuses as close as 9mm with a top magnification of 1.25x. Its circular aperture diaphragm yields pleasing bokeh.

Olympus FL-900R Wireless Flash

The Olympus FL-900R wireless flash features a guide number of 58 and a zoom range of 24-200mm. Sealed against dust and water, recharge time is 2.5 seconds with continuous firing at 1/32 power. An LED lamp lights continuously for video.

The Olympus FL-900R Wireless Flash will ship in October for $575.
