In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention (with more than 140 characters). This time we look at Charles Brittin, Sharbat Gula, an Olympus in Iceland, the Olympus photo contest, a Peterson shot and a Canon refurb sale.

  • In An Activist’s View of the Civil Rights Movement, Mark Speltz considers what the photographs of Charles Brittin, housed at the Getty, reveal about the struggle for civil rights in Los Angeles.
  • 'Afghan Girl' in 1985 National Geographic Photo Is Arrested in Pakistan. Steve McCurry's famous image of Sharbat Gula may now be known as the Before shot after Gula's recent arrest for "fraudulently obtaining national identity cards" and her subsequent mug shot. Gula, a refugee, had acquired the cards for herself and her two sons to allow them to stay in Pakistan. Only a third of Afghan refugees have been able to obtain legal status, resulting in the use of about a million false identity cards. "I am committed to doing anything and everything possible to provide legal and financial support for her and her family," McCurry said in a statement.
  • Derrick Story has his The Olympus EM-1 Mark II in Iceland and despite the "rain, wind, and cold temperatures ... not once during the entire day did I worry about my camera." Or the new Olympus 12-100mm f4 Pro lens.
  • You can enter the Olympus Global Open Photo Contest 2016-17 using any camera through Jan. 10, 2017 to win one Olympus flagship camera in each category.
  • In The Fleeting Moment, Moose Peterson artfully describes using the articulated LCD of a Nikon D750 to capture "my classic arse shot."
  • Canon is offering a 15 percent discount on Refurbished EOS Digital SLR and M Series Digital Cameras when you use the code SPOOKYSAVINGS.

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
