In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention (with more than 140 characters). This time we look at the Gatlinburg wildfires, the Canon 24-105 f4 IS Mark II, a film about surf photographer Clark Little and Image Quality Professor Niels V. Knudsen.

  • Alan Taylor presents 25 image of the Wildfires Near Gatlinburg, Tenn.. The fires began Monday and have destroyed over 250 buildings over 15,000 acres as high winds hampered fire-fighting efforts. Three deaths have been reported.
  • Roger Cicala reports his Canon 24-105 f4 IS Mark II MTF Results. "The new Mk II version is a bit better than the original version, but I was expecting a lot more. I wouldn't rush out and upgrade from the 24-105mm f4 IS if your goal is amazingly better optics," he writes.
  • Shorebreak: The Clark Little Story is a 50-minute documentary about the surf photographer by Peter King. You can find it on DirecTV, In Demand, Dish, iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, Microsoft Xbox, Vubiquity, Vudu and Hoopla. Here's the trailer:
  • Phase One Image Quality Professor Niels V. Knudsen will share some of the latest developments in both digital photography equipment and software, including tips and techniques in Capture One at Bear Images Experience Center in San Francisco tomorrow from 1 to 5 p.m. Registration is $49 via email or phone call to 650-321-2327.

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
