In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention (with more than 140 characters). This time we look at making a Mother's Day card, the National Geographic Travel Photography contest, Vanexus Photography, a Rocky Nook deal, a Pier 24 catalog and how to learn new things as an adult.

  • Derrick Story suggests you Make Your Mother's Day Card Now. He uses Photos for macOS to print his own and spells out how in five steps.
  • Alan Taylor presents 16 entries in the 2017 National Geographic Travel Photographer of the Year Contest. The contest is open until June 30.
  • In the latest Cotton Carrier interview, Karina and Amir from Vanexus Photography talk about their landscape photography, including their gear, their inspiration and being a self-taught professional.
  • Rocky Nook is offering two special deals for Mom (maternity not required); $10 off a $20 purchase with code 10forMOM and $20 off a $50 purchase with code 20forMOM. That's a 50 and 40 percent reduction respectively.
  • Pier 24 has just published its $15 The Grain of the Present gallery guide, a 152-page book with 106 reproductions of the gallery's ninth exhibition. You can preview the guide online, too.
  • In How to Learn New Things as an Adult, Ogla Khazan talks to Ulrich Boser about the neuroscience of learning. Boser, who has just published Learn Better, explains why some things like highlighting and scanning meeting notes, don't help and others, like explaining things to yourself, do. See, we learned something.

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
