In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention (with more than 140 characters). This time we look at Thomas Annan, Masahisa Fukase, avoiding cross contamination, Amelia Earhart, QromaScan and the Glif.
- In These Striking Photos Chronicle the Progress and Difficulty of Life in Modernizing Scotland, Rian Dundon presents photos from Thomas Annan: Photographer of Glasgow, currently on exhibit at the Getty. "His work effectively recorded the transformation of greater Glasgow over the course of several decades, during an era when this 'second city of the empire' flourished," writes museum director Timothy Potts.
- In Masahisa Fukase's Landmark Photo Book to Get Republished This Year, James Cave reports the 1986 photo book Karasu (The Solitude of Ravens) will be republished as Ravens. The 148-page book of tritone plates can be pre-ordered now for $85.
- Strobist David Hobby continues his Lighting 103 series with Avoiding Cross Contamination. "Knowing how to keep your multi-colored lights operating on different planes will help you retain more saturated color," he writes.
- Mike Moffitt asks, Does Newly Discovered Photo Mean Amelia Earhart Survived Crash?. And a new History Channel special airing on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET will attempt to answer the question based on an old photo found in the National Archives. The photo shows the Japanese ship Koshu towing a barge with what appears to be Earhart's plane with the aviator and her navigator on the dock.
- Qroma has updated its QromaScan iOS App, to version 2.3, adding the ability to scan and tag 35mm negatives with the QromaScan SlideBox. The app also captures prints using the QromaScan LightBox. Both products are on 20 percent off using the code SummerSale at checkout. Here's how the SlideBox works:
- Glenn Fleishman reviews the Glif iPhone tripod adapter.
