In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention (with more than 140 characters). This time we look at documenting community radio, Google Photos, the DxO One, infringement, Filmulator and Net Neutrality Day.
- In Argentina's Community Radio Stations Offer an Alternative Look at News, David Gonzales showcases Anita Pouchard Serra's photographs documenting collectives that help community groups where there is no Internet or cell service get on the air for about $1,300. "Sometimes what is being broadcast is not as important as the effect it has on residents," Pouchard Serra says.
- In Google Photos: Five Awesome Features You Should Be Using, Ryan Whitwam highlights "all the machine-learning power that Google Photos has within."
- Derrick Story lauds The Amazing Clarity of the DxO One Camera. You don't hear much about the One any more (or any camera that old, come to think of it) but it remains an unusual iPhone accessory.
- Max Dubler argues No, You Can't Use My Photos on Your Brand's Instagram for Free and, you know, gets flak for it. But he holds his ground, insisting on payment.
- The open source photo editor Filmulator for Linux by Carlo Vaccari "quite literally simulates film: from 'exposure' of film to the growth of 'silver crystals' within each pixel to the diffusion of 'developer' both between neighboring pixels and with the bulk developer in the tank." Here it is in action:
- Today is Net Neutrality Day. Sonic CEO Dan Jasper explains Why You Should Support Net Neutrality. The short version: so your ISP doesn't treat you like your cable company.
More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
