In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention (with more than 140 characters). This time we look at the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 Art lens, poems inspiring pictures, the Leica TL2, architectural portraits, rail systems for rent, external drives and a smartphone tether.

  • In Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG OS HSM Art Sharpness Tests, Roger Cicala reports, "This isn't a bad lens, but we've come to expect amazing things from Sigma Art lenses and this lens is not amazing."
  • How Poems Inspire Pictures discusses the effect reading a poem had on images captured by photographers Carolyn Van Houten, Damon Winter, Zora J. Murff, Nina Robinson, Todd Heisler and Preston Gannaway. To see the paired imaged and poetry, see the accompanying America Today, in Vision and Verse. And, if so inclined, feel free to play along at home.
  • Om Malik posted My Leica TL2 (Mini) Review after using the new $1,900 Leica TL2 alongside the older Leica TL and finds it much improved. "This is an amateur's camera with pro capabilities. That is what makes it fun. Use and shoot with it like an iPhone."
  • In Photographer Duo Captures Incredibly Creative Architecture Portraits, DL Cade highlights the work of Daniel Rueda and Anna Devis, who have fun posing provocatively with architectural details.
  • Peter Krogh has Rail Systems for Rent for $50 a week or $150 a month. It's his preferred method for copying slides. Any dSLR will do but you need a 50-60mm lens for a full-frame model or a 35mm prime for a smaller sensor.
  • TechConnect has published a rundown of Best External Drives 2017. The short list is led by the $114.99 WD My Passport 4TB. The capacity and price table illustrates how bigger drives are better deals.
  • Blackrapid's $19.95 WandeR Bundle is a smartphone safety tether system made of a nylon tether with a 10mm cam lock and a 10mm aluminum hook that connects to a TPU-coated nylon tether tab that pokes through your phone case to which it is attached with 3M double-sided tape. A carabiner is included to attach the tether to a backpack or anything else.

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
