In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention (with more than 140 characters). This time we look at winners of the National Geographic Travel Photographer contest, 10 inexpensive film cameras, cinema lenses, Olivia Locher, Sony FE lenses and a BorrowLenses discount.
- Alan Taylor presents 18 photos from the Winners of the 2017 National Geographic Travel Photographer of the Year Contest.
- Alan Duncan found 10 Pocket Money Classic Cameras (but this is only Part One) you can buy for about the price of a roll of film costs. Which is not a bad way to get started. Shoot black-and-white in an inexpensive compact camera, develop it yourself (Michael Freeman shows you how), scan it and edit it like any other digital image.
- Roger Cicala explains Why We're Going to Start Testing Cinema Lenses. And Why We Haven't Before. Short version: because lens samples vary significantly at the higher frequencies of lines per millimeter when shooting 6K or 8K video. And he has some interesting Olafian images to prove it.
- I Fought the Law is Olivia Locher's color photo project that documents peculiar statutes. Like Alabama's prohibition against putting an ice cream cone in your back pocket. Or, more likely, sticking an American flag on a bar of soap in Nevada. She's publishing the book on Sept. 5 but, like most things in life, it's available for pre-order now.
- Brian Smith answers the eternal question Are Sony FE Lenses as Sharp as Canon & Nikon Glass? with rankings from DxO's lens tests. The short answer is that DxO ranks them as sharper.
- BorrowLenses is offering two rental discounts: $30 off with code SAVE30NOW or 15 percent off with code GET15OFF. Offers expire Aug. 4 and rentals must be delivered by Aug. 8.
More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
