In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention (with more than 140 characters). This time we look at a Puerto Rico update, Louvre copyists, working with Photoshop brushes, the Google Pixel 2, Google's new Pixel storage policy, UV filter flare and finding models on Craigslist.
- In What Puerto Rico Looked Like When Trump Came to Visit, Alan Taylor presents 35 photos of the current situation. "As federal agencies continue to ramp up aid efforts across Puerto Rico, the immense scale and depth of the the impact of Hurricane Maria becomes clearer every day," he writes.
- Steven Dougherty explains How to Walk Out of the Louvre With a Masterpiece. Actually, he follows Parisian photojournalist Ivan Guilbert as he documents the work of a few Louvre copyists practicing a tradition that goes back to 1793.
- Julieanne Kost continues her Photoshop tips series with Five Tips for Working With Brushes:
- DxOMark reviews the Google Pixel 2 with comparisons to the Apple iPhone 8 Plus and Samsung Galaxy Note 8. "We're in danger of running out of superlatives when describing the major image quality attributes of the Google Pixel 2," the review concludes.
- Ryan Whitam points out that The Pixel 2'S Free Original-Quality Google Photos Uploads Are Only Available Through the End of 2020. "This is the first time Google has openly put a clock on the free Photos uploads, but three years isn't bad," he notes, assuming you upgrade your phone at least every three years.
- Jim Kasson measures Flare From 3 UV Filters. He tested Zeiss T*, Hoya Digital HMC and B+W XS Pro UV filters.
- In My Experiment With Finding Models on Craigslist, Derrick Story explains the deal he makes with the type of model he's looking for. So far so good.
