In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the good fight, Danny Wilcox Frazier, Joe McNally, Apple discounts at B&H, Sigma lens sale, three Photoshop tools, DxO PhotoLab, three appsperiments and rolling your own holiday email card.

  • Evelyn Nieves takes A Look at the Heart-Wrenching Moments From Equal Rights Battles published in The Good Fight: America's Ongoing Struggle for Justice, "an ambitious anthology from Against All Odds Productions that brims with enormous moments."
  • Dan Cowles followed Photographer Danny Wilcox Frazier for four days as Frazier documented the lives of his fellow Midwesterners. "We also caught up with him at home back in Iowa City, as he went through the photos he captured on that trip," he writes.
  • In Power and Speed, Joe McNally reports it wasn't a simple assignment. "The action is crossing right in front of camera and I had to use Speedlights at full power in the bright daylight, hence I got one frame per move," he writes.
  • B&H Photo has some surprisingly generous Holiday discounts (like $1,000) on Apple products, including the new MacBook Pro and iPads.
  • Sigma's Art Lens Holiday Sale discount its Art series lenses $100 through Dec. 25. That includes the the Mount Converter MC-11 for Sony E-mount systems, too. The same savings are available from both Adorama and B&H.
  • Julieanne Kost covers The Ruler, Note, and Count Tools in Photoshop CC, which are all accessible from the Eyedropper tool icon.
  • DxO is offering a special 25 percent holiday discount on upgrades to PhotoLab, its OpticsPro replacement, in addition to its introductory offer. The Essential Edition upgrade is $49 instead of $69 and the Elite Edition upgrade is $60 instead of $89. The company is also offering 40 percent off its other software.
  • In Introducing Appsperiments: Exploring the Potentials of Mobile Photography, Google's Alex Kauffman introduces Storyboard (Android), Selfissimo! (iOS, Android) and Scribbies (iOS) as free "appsperiments" you can try. "The feedback and ideas we get from the new and creative ways people use our appsperiments will help guide some of the technology we develop next," he writes.
  • In How to Make an HTML Email Holiday Card last year, we explained how to roll your own responsive email card, even including a template to get you going. We thought we might find a simpler method this year (some app, say), but so far nothing quite compares.

We're running the public service notice below to remind Americans they can sign up for health coverage under the American Health Care Act until Dec. 15 to be insured in 2018.

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
