In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the cold weather, Julieanne Kost's window seat shots, Francis Hodgson, the Canon 85mm f1.4 L IS, a Synology NAS, Asus' AiMesh, a mentor list, reset/rebooting devices and Ajit Pai.

  • In It's Colder Than Hoth Out Here, Alan Taylor shows us what cold looks like in 30 images. Bundle up.
  • In My Favorite Photos Captured From the Window Seat in 2017, Julieanne Kost updates her ongoing project. "While my enthusiasm for aerial photography grows, I've continued to try new approaches to it," she writes. "Instead of limiting myself to taking photographs on commercial flights, I recently hired small aircraft to see what the difference would make in my photos." Non grass grows under her feet.
  • In Submerged Trailer, Salton Sea, 1983 by Richard Misrach, Francis Hodgson puts Misrach among environmental photographers going back to Carleton Watkins. "Misrach offers us this rare watery tourist spot in the desert, turned sour," he says of the image of the flooded trailer. "Yet his camera is not so very different from the tourists' cameras that would have pointed the same way before the water level changed."
  • In MTF Testing the Canon 85mm f1.4 L IS, Roger Cicala gets back to work testing Canon's update to its venerable 40-year-old 85mm f1.2 lens design. "This lens does everything well and one thing (low light) exceptionally well," he writes. "It's the decathlete of 85mm lenses."
  • In A Tech Start to the New Year!, Joe McNally writes about upgrading his in-house storage to a Synology system, populated with Seagate Ironwolf Pro Hard Drives.
  • Asus has announced AiMesh, a firmware update to its older routers that allows them to be repurposed as part of a mesh network, extending your WiFi range.
  • Reddit has launched its 2018 R/Photography Mentor List, providing contact details of photographers who are willing to mentor others.
  • How to Reset and Reboot Any Device reveals a simple solution to a lot of mysterious problems. In fact, we just resolved a nasty email SNAFU by shutting down our laptop and restarting it. "Any" device includes mostly Apple products but also modems, routers, Amazon Echo, smart hubs and apps.
  • After pushing through the repeal of net neutrality rules, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai has canceled an appearance at the Consumer Electronics Show with FTC Chair Maureen Ohlhausen moderated by Consumer Technology Association head Gary Shapiro.

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
