In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at World Press Photo of the Year candidates, Pyeongchang, the Sony FE 24-105mm and Alex Wild.
- Which of These Images Should Be the World Press Photo of the Year? The official announcement will be made April 12, so take your time deciding between the six.
- Alan Taylor presents 40 images from the first five days of Pyeongchang 2018 from short track and slopestyle to ice dancing, skeleton, ski jumping and more. Compelling close-ups, intriguing overheads and n almost mystical No. 7.
- Roger Cicala reports on his MTF Tests of the Sony FE 24-105mm f4 OSS. He's no fan of the category "but it's clearly better than the Canon 24-105mm f4 II IS and at least as good as the Sigma 24-105mm f4 Art or Nikon 24-120mm VR," he writes.
- In Insect Photographer Seeks $2.7 Million for Copyright Violations From Pest Control Company, Stephen Ironside reports that photographer and biologist Alex Wild caught Solutions Pest and Lawn using 18 images from his portfolio without permission or licensing. And after notifying them, Wild noticed they have kept doing it. "It's maddening how often this happens," Wild says.
