DNP has released its first Hot Folder Print utility for Mac OS Sierra and later. The application detects image files, queues the setup by print size, combines them with an enabled border and automatically sends the image to a DNP dye sublimation printer.
The HFP Utility also files the images in an archived folder for future use. Other capabilities include a custom border import, photo editing and color adjustment.
"Complementing our industry-leading dye-sublimation print technology with comprehensive and easy-to-use software is critical for any professional photographer," said Shinichi Yamashita, DNP IAM president. "Making our Hot Folder Print Utility available to Mac users reaffirms our commitment to delivering the best value and ease-of-use to the broadest array of users."
DNP has long supplied a Windows Hot Folder Print utility but this is the first Mac OS Hot Folder Print utility. The 129.4-MB download notes version 1.0.1 is a beta: Hot Folder Print Utility for Mac OS v1.0.1 beta 1.
We previously discussed Creating A Party Printing Folder to create the equivalent of a hot folder for Mac users.
INSTALLATION
DNP is an unrecognized developer so installation of the .mpkp file needs to be run from the default Installer by right clicking on the icon. After installation, you initialize the application by identifying your language and location.
DETECTING A PRINTER
The utility couldn't find the DS-620A attached to the USB port of our router even though that's the usual way we send prints to it, as we explained in the Installation segment of our DS620A review.
So we swapped configurations to the WPS Pro (also covered in the review). But the utility still reported that it could not detect any printers.
PDF documentation is included with the download but it doesn't address this issue other than to say check the cables. So we presumed that to use the utility you must have a direct cable connection from your computer's USB port to the printer.
When we connected the DS620A directly to our computer, the Hot Folder Print utility was able to find the printer.
SETUP
Once the utility was able to identify the printer, we could set up the kind of prints we wanted to make. Here are a few of the options available:
OPERATION
The utility doesn't create a hot folder on your hard drive to which you can drop images for printing as our party printing folder does. Instead, showing its Windows roots apparently, it is itself the hot "folder," providing a window to drag your images into for printing.
You can just drag any selection of supported images to the utility's main window and the Print tab will come up.
We didn't see a way to set more than one print size at a time. So each batch you print will be the same size with the same settings (borders, finish, etc.).
AVAILABILITY
HFP for Mac OS V10.12.X and higher is available now for download. It's free for DNP printer owners.
