In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Evelyn Hofer's New York, Ryo Minemizu's plankton, Navina Khatib in Bolivia, the ad world and packing for a trip.
- In Photographing a Fast-Moving New York, Slowly, Matthew Sedacca profiles Evelyn Hofer who captured mid-20th-century New York before it vanished. And she did it with a 4x5 Linhof Technika view camera. There are some gorgeous (and gritty) images here.
- Lauren Kelly presents a selection of Ryo Minemizu's Jewels in the Night Sea. "Plankton are intriguing and beautiful creatures," Minemizu says. "They symbolise how precious life is by their tiny existence." Not to mention their flamboyant attire.
- In Otherworldly Photos From the World's Largest Salt Flat, Ellyn Kail showcases a few of Berlin-based photographer Navina Khatib's gorgeous pastel images of Bolivia's Salar de Uyuni.
- Kirk Tuck remembers the good old days in Photography as Ever Changing Content in Today's Advertising Paradigm. Multi-day projects, attention to detail at the shoot, tweaked color separations, expensive placements. "Access to the Web changed everything," he writes. "Advertisers have trained consumers to expect daily (and sometimes hourly) engagement; complete with spontaneous feedback loops."
- Five Things You'll Need to Pack for a Safari covers four things besides your gear you might forget even if your safari is a trip out of town.
