In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Hurricane Michael, Tuscany, the Dead Sea, Warhol photography archives, Sky Enhancer, a Nikon Z 7 banding test and a wedding shoot without the groom.
- Alan Taylor collected 28 photos of the devastation from Hurricane Michael. Official assurances to the contrary, communities don't "return to normal" after catastrophes. And they never get all the help they need. You can chip in by visiting redcross.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or texting the word MICHAEL to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
- Dublin photographer Dermot Russell Captures the Emptiness and Essence of Tuscany by focusing on its cypress trees in black and white.
- In Ethereal Photos From the Shores of the Dead Sea, Ellyn Kail presents some enchanting images by Israeli photographer Alexander Bronfer. "Over generations, people have entered into state of tranquility visiting those ancient shores," Bonfer told her. "It's difficult find the right words to describe it. This is the mystery of the Dead Sea."
- Cantor Arts Center and Stanford Libraries have collaborated to make the Warhol Photography Archives Publicly Available. Online databases can retrieve over 130,000 photographs taken by the artist, including 3,600 contact sheets: Andy Warhol Photography Collection: Contact Sheets, Stanford's Andy Warhol Photography Archive and the Cantor's Andy Warhol Photography Archive.
- Skylum has developed an artificial intelligence-powered Sky Enhancer for Luminar. "We've basically trained a neural network to detect the sky and other objects then automatically apply masks touching only the sky itself without altering the edges, making it richer and more vivid yet natural-looking as well." In 45 seconds:
- In Nikon Z 7 -- Banding, or Not?, Jim Kasson tests a report of "banding on Macbeth charts six stops underexposed when pushed six stops in postproduction." And can't find any.
- In Widowed Bride's Final Photos With Her Groom, Kendall Murphy goes through with the ceremony even though the groom had died in an accident nine months earlier. The photographer she'd booked for the wedding did the photo shoot. "I wanted memories of the day that we were supposed to have in my dress," Murphy said.
