In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at National Geographic Photo Contest entries, smoke-filled Chico, Drew Gurian's portraits, Google Photos and Hitler's Young Jewish Friend.
- Alan Taylor presents 15 photos entered in The 2018 National Geographic Photo Contest which remains open for submissions until Nov. 15. The grand prize is $5,000.
- In Drone Footage Shows the Shocking Conditions in Smoke-Filled Chico Michelle Robertson showcases video Michael Peck and his daughter captured last Friday. "They shot from 8 a.m. until noon, though the sky in the footage is so dark it looks like nighttime," she writes. And that's the shocker.
- Portrait and Lifestyle Photographer Drew Gurian presents some excellent portraits (Bonnie Raitt, R.L. Stine, Ed Sheeran, David Byrne to mention a few) and talks about the hits and misses.
- In How Google Photos Became a Perfect Jukebox for Our Memories, Farhad Manjoo describes how the company's A.I.-produced clips made him cry. And that scares him.
- Remarkable Tale of Hitler's Young Jewish Friend presents the signed 1933 photo of Adolf Hitler with his friend, the little girl Rosa Bernile Nienau whose mother was Jewish. When Hitler discovered he and Rosa had the same birthday, he invited Rosa and her mother Karoline up to his Alpine retreat Berghof where photographs were taken. Alexander Historical Auctions will auction one autographed print, also inscribed with Rosa's flowers, on Tuesday, expecting a $10,000 sale.
