In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Emilienne Malfatto, Siegried Hansen, Klaus Lenzen, Gabriela Herman, Chad Wadsworth, a Velbon QB-5LC quick release plate and a Rocky Nook deal.

  • In Photographing the Yazidis in Iraq as They Struggle to Rebuild Their Lives, Sara Aridi talks to Emilienne Malfatto, who has been documenting the lives of Yazidis as they returned to their ancestral homeland after ISIS was routed from the city in 2015. "It's very much a project about living in the aftermath of the destruction of your community," Malfatto said.
  • The Funny Side of the Street showcases Siegried Hansen's "humorous aesthetic of coincidence." He says, "A good street photo is an interplay between photographic know-how, luck and stamina. That takes time and there are no shortcuts." But anyone can do it, he adds.
  • In his series Pole Vault, German photographer Klaus Lenzen frames tight crops of the body and pole to suggest flight without ever showing a full body or action.
  • Heidi Volpe talks to Gabriela Herman about her water lily shoot for Better Homes and Garden. A few days after the shoot, Hurricane Irma destroyed the water garden. "The power of photography becomes even more evident in a scenario like this, where through these images, the garden as it once was can be remembered," she says.
  • Kelly Turner says Austin-based photographer Chad Wadsworth admits his gig is The Coolest Job in the World. "One thing that makes music photography so amazing is that not only are you capturing visually something that you love, but you're surrounded by people who also love it and who are having the time of their lives," he tells her.
  • Looking for a free Velbon QB-5LC Quick Release Plate? This 3D print plan should do the trick in about an hour and 45 minutes.
  • Rocky Nook has just announced the 10th Anniversary Edition of David duChemin's Within The Frame -- and it's available now in eBook format and for pre-order purchases. Save 40 percent with the code WTF1040.

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
