In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Carnival, Julia Lomax, a fisheye, color, portraiture, online printing, a contract, used gear prices, a compact USB hub and a Rocky Nook discount.
- "Blame the Moon" is the theme of Carnival in Venice 2019, Alan Taylor says, presenting 18 photos of the fun.
- In Alone Together: Julia Lomax's Photography Explore the Ways We Ignore and Mirror One Another, Lisa Martin writes, "Lomax says the way people maintain their personal space can be interesting to photograph because it creates patterns that make dynamic compositions." Especially if they're ignoring each other.
- Roger Cicala and team get busy Assembling the C-4 Optics 4.9mm f3.5 Hyperfisheye Prototype. "It's a massive lens giving a 270-degree field of view, meant for immersive video and specialty shots," Cicala writes. Here's the time-lapse version:
- In Color of Place -- and Exploration of Photography, Psychology and Color, Julieanne Kost devises color palettes based on locations like Shaghai and Tasmania (yep, they're different). "While I found it to be a rewarding project in and of itself, it also reinforced the importance of self-alignments as a way to improve our craft and gain personal insights into our work," she writes.
- Mike Johnston's Horror of Highlights looks at the portraiture of Yousuf Karsh and his mentor John Garo (with a funny story tucked in at the end).
- Gannon Burgett lists The Best Place to Print Photos Online in 2019. He suggests four, depending on just what and how you want things done.
- The Wonderful Machine comes up with a $27,150 contract for Portraits for a Fashion Accessory Brand. That includes $12,000 for the licensing fees and, in second place, $3,600 for retouching.
- Flipsy tracked down Digital Camera Prices, Trade in Values & Places to Sell recently, showing online prices to be significantly higher than brick-and-mortar options.
- John Voorhees reviews The HyperDrive Slim 8-in-1 USB-C Hub, which he calls "the best solution I’ve tried."
- Rocky Nook is offering a 40 percent discount on Mirrorless Camera Guides through Feb. 24 when you use the code MIRRORLESS40 at checkout.
