In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Mary Mildred Williams, Astrid Verhoef, Julia Margaret Cameron, sexism in photography, customizable Photoshop keyboard shortcuts, lightning and Monday's Supreme Court copyright ruling.
- In This Photo of a 7-Year-Old Girl Transformed the Abolition Movement, Maurice Berger continues his Race Series with the story of a daguerreotype of Mary Mildred Williams, a light-skinned black girl born into slavery. It was just was recently rediscovered by the photographer and scholar Jessie Morgan-Owens while researching her dissertation and is the subject of her new book Girl in Black and White: The Story of Mary Mildred Williams and the Abolition Movement.
- In Astrid Verhoef's Abstract Series Probes Our Relationship With Nature, Stephanie Wade presents a selection of the photographer's black-and-white images intended to convey "the photographer's psyche as a type of interior landscape, where she questions her connection to nature through surrealist imagery."
- The Unusual Life of Photographer Julia Margaret Cameron is a podcast hosted by Jim Cuno, president of the Getty Trust, with assistant curator of photographs Karen Hellman about the life and work of the 19th century photographer Julia Margaret Cameron. The Getty has published Julia Margaret Cameron, a book containing three early biographies of the photographer.
- Clarissa Sesbag-Montefiore presents a selection of images in Women Battling Sexism in Photography -- a Picture Essay.
- In Customizable Keyboard Shortcuts in Photoshop CC, Julieanne Kost reveals, "My rule of thumb is: if I use the feature/tool more than 3 times a day, then I'm going to either learn the shortcut assigned to it or, if there isn't one, I'm going to assign my own." For years, we've assigned Command-F to Flatten Image. Couldn't live without it.
- Photographer Captured Iconic Lightning Photos -- and Risked Getting Zapped Himself report Alene Tchekmedyian and Hannah Fry. "Mike Eliason stood in a puddle at the end of a wooden wharf over the ocean in Santa Barbara as a dramatic lightning storm off the Southern California coast lit up the sky. Thunder roared like someone was shaking sheet metal. He set up his metal tripod and camera." All he needed, he said, was a golf club in his hand.
