In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Midwest floods, SXSW, camera reviews, chasing gains, Canon firmware notice, AI, MySpace, copyright and a Rocky Nook deal.
- Alan Taylor presents 24 photos of the Historic Flooding Across the Midwest. No. 11 sums it up for us.
- Kirk Tuck takes a Panasonic G9 and Olympus 40-150mm f2.8 Pro to shoot SXSW in Downtown Austin. He shot wide open all day.
- In Testing Cameras Like Cars, Jim Kasson considers the state of camera reviewing these days. He's a little too dogmatic on the influence of junkets on impoverished reviewers. Some people can be influenced, some not. We never were (and weren't invited to go on any junkets, come to think of it). But we always knew who we worked for (you).
- In Chasing Gains, Thom Hogan revisits on aspect of the fake ISO debate that's worth emphasis.
- Canon has issued Firmware Notice: EF 400mm f2.8L IS III USM and EF 600mm f4L IS III USM Lenses after determining "that during movie shooting when attached to certain EOS dSLR cameras, with the camera's shooting mode set to M or Av mode, some exposure flicker may happen." It's not an issue when shooting stills, though. "Canon is currently developing a firmware solution, which is expected to be released in the near future," the company added.
- In Demystifying and Democratizing Artificial Intelligence, Dana Rao, vice president of intellectual property and litigation at Adobe, argues "the onus is on technology companies to take the steps necessary to institute bias detection in developing and deploying AI systems."
- Sean Keane reports MySpace Reportedly Loses 50 Million Songs Uploaded Over 12 Years. The company blames "a server migration project" that went awry.
- In Copyright Office Releases an Updated Draft of the Compendium of US Copyright Office Practices, Third Edition, Carolyn Wright notes, "On April 10, at 2 p.m. [ET], the Copyright Office will hold a webinar to review the proposed revisions and hold a Q&A session."
- Rocky Nook's Deal of the week is 40 percent off all titles by David duChemin when you use the code RDDD40 at checkout.
