In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at New Zealand, Patricia Davidson, a Holi palette, moody black-and-whites, equipment failure, the Think Tank Photo Vision 13 shoulder bag and a beginner's guide.

  • Alan Taylor presents 25 photos of Mourning in New Zealand from the last few days. "As people mourn the 50 killed last Friday, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is calling for stricter national gun laws and says she will seek answers from social-media companies about the live-streaming and dissemination of video of the attack," he writes.
  • In Patricia Davidson, Landscape Photographer, Davidson talks about some of the things she learned traveling full-time in an RV with her husband for the last four years. "The water run off can be pretty intense in the spring so hopefully these ideas will help you get the best images while out in the field," she writes.
  • In On Color in India: A Holi Palette, Gopi Vadsak talks about choosing a color palette for his images and why he likes muted colors more than saturated ones. "Highly saturated color may help an image pop out in the crowd, but silent colors give an image an artistic feel that's pleasing to the eye," she writes.
  • This one-minute clip from Adobe shows you how to Get Moody With Black and White Photos"
  • Robin Wong suffers Equipment Failure in the Field when the LCD on his Olympus E-P5 dies and he has to shoot without composing. He takes advantage of the situation to learn a few lessons.
  • Derrick Story reviews Think Tank Photo Vision 13 Shoulder Bag. He calls it "my favorite urban model from them to date. I truly like it. And at $129, it's a good value as well."
  • Jo Thomas has written The Ultimate Beginner's Guide to Photography, a comprehensive introduction to the subject for anyone tempted to take it up as a hobby but intimidated by the subject. She's not intimidating, keeping out of the rabbit holes to cover picking a camera, using your smartphone, what a camera can do, and even some post-processing.

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
