In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Emperor Akihito, Petra Van Der Ree, Perth again, Raw+JPEG, the Canon G15, Seattle's shipwrecks and better-looking skies.
- The Guardian highlights The Life and Reign of Emperor Akihito with an album of images spanning the 85-year-old emperor's life. He will step down on May 1.
- In Petra Van Der Ree's Photographs Take Us Outside Ourselves, Rosie Flanagan presents a selection of the Rotterdam-based Web, text, and image editor's images. "I take pictures, not for a living, but for reasons that I'm not quite sure of yet," Van Der Ree says. But the attraction is not lost on the viewer.
- Robin Wong has posted the second part of his series Shutter Therapy in Perth. These are all monochrome images. He "shot everything in color and converted some of the shots in post. However, most of the images shown here were shot with the intention of being presented in black and white."
- In Why Raw+JPEG Pairs Will Never Go Away, Derrick Story explains why he's captured two files for the same image for years.
- Kirk Tuck took his new acquisition, a Canon G15 for a walk through Austin. "I figure that when shooting Raw I can under exposure by 1/3 to 2/3rds of a stop and recover the file nicely in Photoshop without sacrificing my highlights," he notes.
- Jenny McGrath explains How a Clever Photography Trick Is Bringing Seattle's Shipwrecks to the Surface. In a word: photogrammetry.
- Scott Kelby shares an Awesome Quick Tip for Better-Looking Skies. Switch to the HSR/Color panel in your software, click on Luminance and accentuate the Blue slider.
