In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Susie Keef Smith, Niko J Kallianiotis, the N.Y. Times Lens column, Frank Doorhof, focusing on the iPhone, a one-hour photo printing app and a Nik Collection discount.
- In These Adventurous Women Photographed the California Desert in the 1920s, Winnie Lee tells how a dumpster diver rescued a trove of photographs by Susie Keef Smith and her cousin Lula Mae Graves. The images have been published in Postcards from Mecca, The California Desert Photographs of Susie Keef Smith and Lula Mae Graves, 1916-1936.
- In Boom to Bust: Faded Smalltown America, the Guardian presents a few images by Niko J Kallianiotis, who "traveled through the main streets of Pennsylvania to photograph 'the silhouette of what once was' now the coal industry has gone." Red seems to be a theme in these shots.
- Ten Years of Photography, and Lens celebrates a decade of The New York Times Lens column, with more to come tomorrow. "If Lens had a credo, it was this: Photography does not happen by itself; it happens because of photographers." And that's really what the column has been trumpeting all these years.
- Portrait Photographer Frank Doorhof knows you want to know about lighting setups but he wants to talk about shadows.
- Kate Wesson provides Ten Focus Tips for Perfectly Sharp iPhone Photos which include advice about bokeh and low light.
- MailPix has announced its One Hour Photo photo-printing app for iOS and Android now connects to 20,000 retail locations, including CVS, Walmart, Target, Walgreens and Duane Reade. You can order 4x6, 5x7, 8x10 prints, photo panels, photo magnets and 4x8 greeting cards for pick up within an hour. No credit card needed until you get there.
- DxO is offering Nik Collection by DxO for $59.99 (a 15 percent discount from the $69 regular price) until May 28.
