In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the Mother of Exiles, eye autofocus, black-and-white smartphone apps, Kelby's 12th Annual Worldwide Photo Walk, focus in macro photography and Hitcase iPhone lenses.
- Alan Taylor presents 25 photos of The Statue of Liberty, Mother of Exiles. None of them are postcards. Some go back to construction in Paris, in fact. But our favorites are seeing the flame of "imprisoned lightning" still burning with "world-wide welcome ... beside the golden door."
- Jim Kasson provides some examples of the Fujifilm GFX 100 Eye Autofocus. "Of all the eye-AF MILCs I know, only the Nikon Z 6 and Z 7 give you the opportunity to dial in some focus compensation to improve your odds of focusing on the iris," he writes.
- Jackie Dove reviews seven of The Best Black-And-White Photo Apps for iOS and Android.
- Scott Kelby is Announcing My 12th Annual Worldwide Photo Walk on Oct. 5 in over 1,000 cities "all over the world." Here's Scott (off by one in his count of walks):
- Jason Row explains How to Achieve Perfect Focus in Macro Photography. We'd only add that you can avoid a good deal of frustration by moving the subject into focus (when possible) instead of trying to find focus with the camera.
- Kate Wesson reviews the Hitcase iPhone Lenses for Macro & Wide-Angle Photography. The glass lenses with both magnetic and screw mounts are each $40 and the screw-mount case $100.
