Christie's has reported the results of its Oct. 2 photography auction, which included a special group of prints sold to benefit the Aperture Foundation's capital campaign to purchase new headquarters in New York.

On and On. William Wegmann's four archival pigment prints sold for nearly $700,00 over the estimated high, benefiting the Aperture Foundation.

The sprecial group of works donated by artists, collectors, gallerists and Aperture board members realized a total of $716,500 for the foundation.

Highlights of the auction included Helmet Newton's $399,000 sale, the top lot. It was followed by a László Moholy-Nagy at $275,000.

Photographs October Sales at Christie's New York

New York Photograph Auction Total: $6,015,000

NEW YORK -- The top lot across both the morning and day sessions was Helmut Newton (1920-2004) Panoramic Nude, Woman with Gun, Villa d'Este, Como, 1989, which realized $399,000. Another highlight of the Oct. 2 sale included László Moholy-Nagy (1895-1946), From the Radio Tower, Berlin, 1928, which realized $275,000.

Additional standout results were achieved for works by Peter Beard (b. 1938) including World-Class Black Rhino, Aberdare Forest 1972, which realized $250,000 against its pre-sale estimate of $40,000 to 60,00 and Large tusker (c. 150 lbs. per side), Tsavo North, near hunting block 33/ Ithumber Hill on the Athi-Tiva dry river, February 1965, which achieved $225,000 against its pre-sale estimate of $40,000 to 60,000.

Additionally, Beard's Orphaned Cheetah Cubs, Mweiga, Kenya, 1968, realized $250,000.

Setting an auction record for the artist was William Wegman (b.1943) On and On, 2015, which sold for $50,000 against a pre-sale estimate of $12,000 to 18,000. This brightly colored set of four archival pigment prints was part of a special group of photographs sold to benefit Aperture Foundation's capital campaign to raise funds to purchase a new headquarters in New York. The grouping of works -- which were generously donated by artists, collectors, gallerists and Aperture board members -- realized a total of $716,500.
