29 October 2019

An announcement on the main page of Canon's Irista site advises the photo sharing service will close on Jan. 31, 2020. The Photo Book service will remain available only until Jan. 14, 2020.

"You can continue to access to your photos until the service closes," the note says, presumably to download your images before they become inaccessible in February 2020. A button facilitates the download.

A few more details are available in a FAQ. Following are a few highlights:

What will happen to my content and personal data once the service is closed?

We will proceed to completely delete your content and data from our servers as quickly as possible after the closure date. You must download all your photos and videos before this date if you want to save them and do not have copies stored elsewhere.

So that you can continue to use Canon ID to access other Canon services, your Canon ID account will not be deleted. If you do not want Canon to retain the personal data used by Canon ID, you can visit myid.canon to delete your Canon ID account.

How can I download all my photos and videos?

There is a download link on your account profile page. When you click this link, we will package your photos and videos into a set of zip files of around 4GB each, so that you can download them in manageable chunks. You will need to download each zip file one by one.

Preparing the zip files for download should only take a few seconds. The time needed to download each file will depend on your internet connection. The zip files will persist for download until the site closes on 31 January 2020, or until you delete your account.

Please be aware that if you upload new photos or videos after preparing your content for download, the new content will not be contained in previously generated zip files. You will need to regenerate the download in order prepare a new set of zip files to download your new content. Be sure to download all of the zip files again as the contents will vary from previously generated zip files. Downloads can only be regenerated once a day.

What happens to all my tags, photo ratings, titles and albums?

Unfortunately, this information will be lost as it cannot be exported.

If I place an order for a photo book, will I receive it?

We are leaving the Photo Book service in place until 14 January 2020 to allow you create and order books before the service closes. All orders received will be fulfilled according to our Terms of Service.

Will my Canon camera Wi-Fi synchronisation still work?

Yes, all configured camera synchronisation connections to Irista will continue to work until the service closes. On 31 January 2020, the synchronisation functionality will be removed from Canon Image Gateway and image synchronisation to Irista will cease. Then, if your camera connection is still enabled, you will see an error message on the camera. The error message will vary by product. You will need to choose and configure another service if you still want to sync images through Canon Image Gateway.

We strongly recommend that you disable all camera image synchronisation connections to Irista before downloading all of your photos from Irista.

Will Camera Wi-Fi synchronisation affect downloading my photos from Irista?

Camera synchronisation will not affect photo downloads, but we strongly recommend that any camera synchronisation connections to Irista are disabled before preparing your photos for download. This will ensure that new photos are not uploaded to your account during or after the content download process, and that your content download zip files contain all of the photos and videos uploaded to your Irista account.

Irista was launched in June 2014. It permitted Raw uploads and Exif header editing, providing the first 10-GB of storage at no charge.
