In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at photos of the week, inspiration, selling Raw files, a Mare Island workshop plus Canon and Nikon deals.

  • Alan Taylor presents 35 Photos of the Week covering a lot of ground. "Wind-driven California wildfires, Saint Simon celebrations in Guatemala, a World Series victory in Houston, an ancient mosque in Niger, continuing protests in Chile, a bus in a sinkhole in Pittsburgh, an oil-tank art gallery in Australia, the vanishing Mekong river, Halloween in Belgium and much more," he catalogs them. We particularly like No. 16, a maid working the hallway of a hotel in Japan, seen through the windows from across the way.
  • Taissia Iv offers Twenty Exciting Photo Prompts to Inspire You. "You might need a few simple exercises to refresh your mind and discover a whole new world of photography ideas," she suggests.
  • How Do You Feel About Clients Asking for Unedited or Raw Images? prompts interesting discussion on Reddit. We'd just add that there's a substantial difference between a Raw out of the camera with no sidecar and a DNG that's been edited (and includes the edits in its header). Both of which are worth substantially more than a JPEG rendering.
  • Phase One, Camera West and photographer Michael Horowitz will hold a medium format photography workshop on Mare Island in San Francisco Bay on Nov. 17. "From industrial buildings to the Naval chapel, containing original Tiffany stained glass and the dry docks, there will be many unique photographic opportunities," Camera West notes. "Phase One will be lending their support along with demo Phase One IQ4 150 cameras in both the XT system and XF system configurations." It's $499 for the day (starting at 7 a.m.), including lunch.
  • In the Deals department, Canon is offering up to 30 percent off select refurbished products through today and Nikon has extended its fall discounts through Nov. 27.

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
