In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Lee Bey, Ziqian Liu, Ming Thein, David Burnett, film processing labs, Photoshop productivity, portrait photography poses and Blackblaze hard drive stats.
- Chicago architectural expert and photographer Lee Bey showcases the Hidden Grandeur in Chicago's South Side in his new book Southern Exposure.
- Christina Nafziger presents Ziqian Liu's Fragmented Images of the Self which use small mirrors to include a crop of the subject in the frame and fruit and flowers to reflect "the symbiosis between human beings and nature."
- Ming Thein's photo essay Nostalgia is a collection of black-and-white memories. "Emotions tend to skew things toward extremes and photos can either be a normalizing factor or an emotionally enhancing one," he writes.
- In Why This Photographer Brought a 1940s Wooden Camera to the Impeachment Inquiry, CBC Radio interviews photographer David Burnett about his choice of equipment. "Just to set the record straight -- as they might say at one of these hearings -- I did also carry a digital camera with me, like, in case news actually breaks out," he begins.
- Film Processing Labs? asks for the names of reliable film processing services, which have become nearly extinct as professionals moved to digital photography. There are already a few firms mentioned.
- Julieanne Kost has made her Adobe MAX session Increase Your Photoshop Productivity With Tips and Tricks From A-Z available on YouTube, although the link doesn't seem to go there yet. Julieanne?
- Jasenka Grujin suggests Three Key Poses for Portrait Photography: hands on waist, seated and moving.
- Blackblaze has published its Hard Drive Stats Q3 2019. The report includes an interesting discussion of just what drive failure is.
