In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at creativity, China, prison libraries, the +anasonic S1 vs. the Nikon Z 7, affordable gifts, larger sensor compacts, the Jollylook Mini camera and Kevin Raber.
- In For Tomorrow's Leaders, Creativity Is More Powerful Than Technology, James McCready argues it's essential to develop creative "muscle" in school "to think, solve problems, invent in new ways, and, ultimately, deliver exceptional outcomes."
- Jonathan Blaustein makes a stab at Understanding China with "some actual, unpublished, hot-off-the-presses documentary photography, straight from the front lines in Hong Kong, which has been roiled by massive protests this year."
- Books Have the Power to Rehabilitate is illustrated with rather stark images by Carlos Chavarría.
- Kirk Tuck compares the Panasonic S1 and Nikon Z 7 with their 50mm primes over coffee. An eye-opener.
- Derrick Story lists some affordable (and that's the trick) Party Gifts and Stocking Stuffers for Photographers.
- In A Compact Death, Ming Thein considers the larger sensor compacts market and sees "an opportunity" for some manufacturer "while there still are people to buy such a camera."
- The $69.90 Jollylook Mini Instant Camera is made of recycled cardboard and uses Fujifilm Instax Mini film. The compact mechanical camera is entirely manual with a rubber-band powered shutter. No batteries required. Daven Mathies give is a look.
- In Happy Thanksgiving and Thank You, Kevin Raber looks back to last year's traumas and gives thanks to this year's blessings in a rare inside look behind the scenes at two publications.
