In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at hopeful images, a climate change protest, testing a new camera, the 16-Inch MacBook Pro, product photography, a daguerreotype preserved and a photo expo.
- Alan Taylor presents 28 Hopeful Images From 2019. "I've made it an annual tradition to compose an essay of uplifting images from the past year -- an effort to seek out and recognize some of the abundant joy and kindness present in the world around us," he writes.
- After his piece about photographing people in public, Andrew Molitor takes his kids to a climate change protest and fires away. "The young people in this youth-led protest were almost 100 percent girls. I dunno what that means," he writes.
- In How to Test a New Camera, Jim Kasson suggests a few things to check. Many fewer than you used to have to do.
- 9to5Mac's Jeff Benjamin reviews the 16-Inch MacBook Pro:
- Derrick Story explains Why I Prefer Micro Four Thirds for Product Photography. Image stabilized, hand-held shooting is a big reason.
- In Conserving One of the Oldest Photographs in MoMA's Collection, conservator Lee Ann Daffner rehouses a daguerreotype of Rome by Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey.
- Kirk Tuck's favorite camera store held a photo expo the other day. "Well represented at the Photo Expo at Precision Camera were: Sony, Olympus, Sigma, Panasonic, Nikon, Canon, Fuji and many other photography suppliers," he reports.
