In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at clouds, rentals, the Nikon 24-70/2.8 S, Tuck's recommendations, Google Portrait Mode, Instagram, the Getty and a Rocky Nook discount.
- The Cloud Appreciation Society is always looking up. A Cloud a Day by Gavin Pretor-Pinney gives you a reason to keep your head in the clouds every day for a year.
- Zach Sutton reports the Most Popular Photography and Videography Rentals for 2019 at LensRentals. Among the surprises: Nikon's highest rating is 13th for the D750. The "Canon 50mm f1.2L still maintains its place on the top 10 list, despite being a lens released in 2007," Sutton adds.
- Jim Kasson posts the results of his Nikon 24-70/2.8 S First Tests. "So far, this is quite encouraging," he writes.
- Kirk Tuck recommends Five Cameras for serious photographers (there's more than five) before praising The Second Most Incredible Lens I Have Ever Used, which would be the Panasonic Lumix 50mm f1.4 Pro S lens.
- Google researchers explains the Improvements to Portrait Mode on the Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL.
- In Combatting Misinformation on Instagram, Instagram announces a new policy for "expanding our fact-checking program globally to allow fact-checking organizations around the world to assess and rate misinformation on our platform." The company will label content rated false and optionally send it to fact-checkers for review.
- In Reflections on 10 Years in Art, Archives and Conservation, Caitlin Shamberg collects the observations of Getty staffers on the key development in their field of the past decade. More than meets the eye here.
- Rocky Nook is offering a 40 percent discount on its photography books catalog when you use the code HOLIDAY2019 at checkout.
