In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at sports photography, new stars, the Staten Island Ferry, gifting photography, Christmas photography and Darktable 3.0.0.

  • Jim Powell presents The Best Sports Photography of 2019 including "Tiger Woods's comeback at the Masters, the brilliance of Simone Biles, Pep Guardiola berating Raheem Sterling, Ben Stokes's World Cup heroics, Liverpool's stunning Champions League defeat of Barcelona, Megan Rapinoe's iconic celebration and South Africa's Siya Kolisi lifting the Rugby World Cup trophy."
  • Stellar Snowflake Cluster is NASA's image of the day. It shows newly-revealed infant stars appear in pink and red specks toward the center. We could use a few new stars.
  • In Life Aboard the Staten Island Ferry, Stephanie Wade looks at Home For Now, a series of images by Collin Hughes. "Life in the city is fast and relentless, but on the ferry all is still," Hughes says, "save for the sea air and the sights that have greeted immigrants and tourists for almost a century: the Statue of Liberty and the skyscrapers winking across the bay."
  • In Gifting Photography, Dave Williams suggests giving prints (and shows a couple of images he printed this holiday season). "Having a photograph printed on a wall or in our hands to hold and to feel and to look at with awe, is that extra step which we're losing in our digital age," he writes.
  • Jasenka Grujin has Seven Creative Ideas for Memorable Christmas Photography that are also easy to remember in the heat of the moment.
  • Darktable 3.0.0 has been released with a new user interface, new shortcuts and more.

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
