In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Ben Brody, Xiomara Bender, Cindy Sherman, Ellen Silverman, focus, the Nikon Z50, used gear and two theories.

  • In 'Relentless Absurdity': An Army Photographer's Censored Images, Luke Mogelson takes a look at Ben Brody's Attention Servicemember, which has been shortlisted for the Aperture-Paris Photo First Book Award. For the book, Brody mined some 25,000 images from his tour in Iraq that he had kept in his closet for 10 years.
  • North Korea The Power of Dreams highlights Xiomara Bender's ninth trip to the isolated country last September. "I have a pretty good impression of how everyday life unfolds in many places, but even so you don't really get to see it," she says.
  • Miss Rosen explains How Cindy Sherman Revolutionized Portrait Photography. "For more than 40 years, Sherman has conducted a fascinating masquerade, using photography to ensnare and unravel the complex relationships between the camera and the self," she writes.
  • Heidi Volpe interviews Ellen Silverman about her shoot for the New York Times -- the Neediest Case. "It was a pleasure to spend those few hours photographing Julio, a young man who has faced more adversity in his life than most of us can begin to imagine," Silverman recalls.
  • Kirk Tuck asks, How Much Really Needs to Be in Focus? Well, how noisy can your background be?
  • Tom Hogan reviews the Nikon Z50 and likes what he sees. But he doesn't see enough lenses for the DX format. Still.
  • In Get It Used, Kevin Raber applauds Used Photo Pro, "one of the largest used camera services in the country." We did a brief search for dSLR bodies and were impressed with the prices.
  • Ming Thein proposes Two Theories that may have you scratching your head.

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
