Today marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the German concentration camp in Poland where 1.1 million people were exterminated during World War II. The day of liberation by Soviet troops has been commemorated since 2005 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Temple Emanu-El. At Two Lake St. in San Francisco, near the Presidio.

We have long displayed a small print of the photo above that we took at Temple Emanu-El in San Francisco some time ago. It's an image of the gates, whose iron bars seem like flames. It reminds us of the Holocaust survivors we have known, the suffering they endured and the threats that haunt us even today.

We invite you to remember, along with us, the 1.1 million victims of the camp with a moment of silent reflection that, from a distance, might be mistaken for prayer.
