In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Karen Knorr, artificial lighting, a 30-inch NEC monitor deal, macOS permissions and the Feature Shoot Street Photography Awards.

  • Karen Knorr recalls her best photo in Repose in a Gentlemen's Club. It was shot in Brooks's, a gentlemen's club in London, in 1982 during the Falklands war.
  • In Three Misconceptions That May Be Hurting Your Business, Sandra Coan defends artificial lighting. "I had a lot of misconceptions about strobes and flash," she confesses. "And believing in those misconceptions did more than just keep me from learning to create my own light. Those beliefs hurt my business."
  • In LG 5K Display for Mac Pro or Other, Plus Awesome Deal on NEC PA302W, Lloyd Chambers praises the three USB-C ports of the LG display before detailing a NEC refurb deal on 30-inch monitors for $440.
  • Howard Oakley reports Repairing Permissions in Your Home Folder Has Changed. The new recommendations are contained in a Jan. 9 Apple Support article, which "drops any mention of using command tools such as diskutil resetUserPermissions."
  • Feature Shoot is now accepting submission for its first annual Feature Shoot Street Photography Awards. "Open to photographers of all levels and locations, these Awards will celebrate the randomness and uniqueness of everyday life and will see 10 winning entrants have their images turned into 36x24 posters at Six locations in New York for a week," the company said. Entry fee is $15 for up to 5 images.
